    Site Visit: Oural in Dry Dock

    Hello Antoine, to start, can you tell us what the main stages of your career have been?

    I joined CFT Seine in 2013 as part of a BTS Industrial Maintenance program. I continued with a professional degree in port and naval maintenance in Brest, still alternating at CFT Seine. After completing my training, I had the opportunity to join the technical department of CFT Seine as a maintenance manager.

    What are your main responsibilities?

    I am responsible for the technical and regulatory monitoring of about twenty river vessels (push boats, barges, self-propelled boats) dedicated to freight transport (containers, tankers, urban distribution, etc.).

    I organize various preventive maintenance tasks as well as technical stops, relying on our CMMS tool (Carl), which allows me to track each boat and equipment on board according to the maintenance schedules we’ve defined. I also prepare the administrative files for obtaining or renewing the certifications necessary for operation (Union certificate, Class, ADN, etc.).

    In the event of a breakdown, I am one of the main technical contacts for the crew. I also handle the management of spare parts stock and technical purchases.

    You worked in September and October on the five-year technical stop of the Oural. Can you explain how this process works?

    The technical stop (TS) begins with a crucial preparation phase, during which I define the scope of the work, consult companies, and estimate the project costs. This step helps optimize time and resources during the stop. During the stop, I spend about half of my time on-site to:

    • Monitor the progress of the work and coordinate contractors to meet deadlines;
    • Write and validate safety documents (work permits, hot work permits, etc.);
    • Supervise the application of safety protocols through regular inspections;
    • Manage unforeseen events, whether they are related to working conditions or unplanned tasks, while ensuring the safety of the workers.

    What do you enjoy most about your job?

    What I enjoy the most is the variety, as no day is the same. Every situation brings its own set of challenges, which provides an opportunity to learn a lot. I also appreciate the flexibility: I organize my work the way I want, depending on the tasks at hand. Of course, this also means being highly available.

    In your opinion, what qualities are necessary to be a good maintenance supervisor ?

    For a young person who wants to pursue a career as a maintenance manager, I would say they need to develop basic technical knowledge in all fields, have a strong sense of organization, and be good at building relationships (which is crucial when there can be 20 to 30 workers on board at the same time). One must enjoy traveling to regularly visit the vessels. And above all, they must be—or become—passionate!
